Finding the Right Rug Size

You may not realise it, but most rooms look better with a rug.

In fact, it is rather surprising how much impact a rug can have on your home, changing the look and feel of a room as soon as it hits the floor. With more and more people opting for wood or hard flooring in their home, a rug is the next must have item for you home. So now you know you need a rug and you know what style you want, how do you go about choosing the right one for your home? Keep reading for our tips on how to find the right rug size.

Living Room

In a large room with a floating seated area, it is wise to pick a rug large enough to accommodate all pieces of furniture, including their front and back legs. This will unify the room, giving it a warm and cosy feel. This technique works especially well for open plan living spaces where you want to segment the living room from the kitchen.

In smaller rooms where the sofa is up against the wall, a rug that sits neatly under the front two legs of the sofa as well as the coffee table. This is a more cost-effective option that still makes the room feel warm and cosy. Just remember the most important thing is that your rug is big enough for you to rest your feet on it while you’re sat on the sofa.

The same applies to your bedroom as it does your living room, if you can afford a rug large enough to hold all of the furniture (bed and bedside tables) or one that sits just beneath the bedside tables. This means that there is a warm rug for you to step onto when you get out of bed. Another option is to place two separate smaller rugs on each side of the bed.

Dining Room

When it comes to a dining room the choice is very clear: pick a rug that you can rest your chairs and tables on comfortably. Other furniture such as side boards do not need to sit on the rug, and remember to pick a rug size in relation to the size of your table. Before purchasing your rug, measure not only the size of the room but also the space you want it to cover. For a better idea of how the rug will look, mark out the size of your rug using masking tape.
