My Place or Yours: Casual Dining
Yes, casual dining is in! Put those bone china plates back from whence they came! Antique silver cutlery? Maybe another day, but not today.
We’re talking one-for-all big bowls, one-pot wonder meals, tear and share group gatherings, and modern crockery for the modern household. As our hours of daylight start to shrink, so does the interest in making four different dressings as you might have done during summer. Now is the time to embrace a new way of doing things – like chucking it all in a stew pot and letting it do its thing.
If you’re having friends over for an impromptu dinner, a few big plates in the centre of the table will do the job. You don’t want to be tied to the oven when you should be mingling and catching up, and you don’t want to be a tower of pots to shoehorn into the dishwasher when everybody leaves.
If you’ve just moved into a new place and you feel like you want to the kind of household where laid back is a way of life, consider swapping out your usual dining chairs for a bench instead. This way you’ll be able to squeeze more people in when you need to, and no one need sit on the office chair you’ve dragged in from the next room (although swivelling is fun).
This way of meeting and eating is great for house shares, big families with even bigger extended families, sociable singletons, the couple that love to host, and pretty much anyone else! Formal dining does have its charms, but this is about making everyday dining special.
