Sleep Tips for Little Ones
Babies and children squeeze lots of learning and play into every day, so it’s no wonder they need extra sleep. We have lots of ways to comfort your little ones at bedtime and help them get the rest they need. We’re sharing 5 tips to help your little one drift off after their busy day:
Dim the Lights
We all know that dimming the lights helps us switch off and get ready for bed. This is especially important for babies and children. Using softer lighting before bedtime gets their brains ready for sleep.
Whether a bear, a comfort blanket or another cuddly friend, having something soft to hold helps little ones self-soothe. Stuffed toys provide a feeling of safety and calmness. They offer a consistency at night time when Mum and Dad are sleeping themselves, and can help your baby or child drift off with ease.
Surrounding your baby with snuggly textures will help them nod off. Babies often sleep best at between 16 and 20 degrees so it’s important not to wrap them up too warm. A soft cotton sleep bag is perfect for little wrigglers, and you won’t be woken up by someone who wants their blanket back!
Singing to or playing music for your baby before sleep can help put them at ease. Stimulating the brain with a melody helps young children learn and recognise the sound of words, which aids cognitive development. If made part of the baby bedtime routine, music and lullabies can strengthen the emotional bond between parent and child.
Darkness is essential for quality sleep. Exposure to light in the evening disrupts our bodies natural release of melatonin, the hormone which signals to our brain that it’s time to rest. Blocking out light and sound is a proven way to prevent restlessness. Here at Dunelm, we offer a wide range of curtains and blinds help you prepare your baby nursery for a great night’s sleep.
