Marsh violet likes damp spots such as wet woodlands, marshes or bogs. This low-growing plant is the food of the small pearl-bordered fritillary, a pretty orange and brown butterfly that gets its name from the ‘row of pearls’ on the underside of its hindwings. This species is in severe decline in England.
