About this design

Morris championed nature, and his designs were commonly asymmetric to reflect the organic imperfections of the natural world. ‘Woodland weeds’, however, is curiously symmetrical. The design features a variety of small flowers, vines, and leaves interwoven in a beautiful and detailed arrangement. This highly decorative pattern is reminiscent of medieval millefleur, an artistic method of filling the background of paintings or textiles with abundant tiny flowers, flora, and fauna; a technique Morris is known to have admired.
