William Morris had a great admiration for rivers, from the humble stream that passed by Kelmscott Manor to the great River Wandle that he used to dye his textiles at Merton Abbey. From 1883 William Morris At Home began designing a series of gently flowing patterns named after tributaries of the River Thames. The ‘Lodden’ pattern is part of this series, named after the River Loddon that flows through Berkshire and Hampshire.
