Top Tips for Decorating Your Garden

While it can seem like sunny days are few and far between in Britain, when it arrives we really make the most of it. As soon as the sun comes out, most of us want to be in the garden from our breakfast in the morning till before bed at night, so it should feel like an extension of your house. Gardens are often ignored when it comes to decorating but we’ve got some top tips for decorating to help you love your garden as much as the rest of your home.

Start with The Basics

Decorating is the best part of any project but before we get into ornaments and accessories, the basics must be in order. Have a good tidy up of your garden, getting rid (or upcycling) any old furniture or garden accessories. Be sure to get rid of any weeds, mow the lawn or do any other messy jobs to get your garden into shape

Furniture

The furniture in your garden plays a big part in what your space will look like, so carefully consider where it will go and what you want it to look like. Furniture that hasn’t been correctly protected or stored may need replacing or bringing back to life with a lick of paint. Pots and Planters

Gone are the days where terracotta plant pots were the only option for your garden. Planters now come in a variety of shapes and sizes, including everything from colourful pots to animal planters, so get creative with how you display your flowers.

Garden Ornaments

The traditional garden gnome is not the only ornament that will be making an appearance in gardens up and down the country this year, as flamingos and peacocks are a huge trend. The vibrant blues and greens of a peacock and the pretty pinks of a flamingo will add an eye-catching element to any garden.

Candles

Citronella Candles are essential in the summer months for keeping those pesky bugs and mosquitoes at bay. Not only does citronella mask the scents that are attractive to insects but candles add a warm, romantic glow to a summers evening. Add tealights to hanging lanterns or arrange groups of candles on the floor or on a table to create clusters of light throughout your garden. Just remember to be careful with candles and never leave them unattended or within the reach of children or pets.

All of The Lights

Just because the sun has gone down that doesn’t mean you have to stop enjoying your garden. Add some fairy lights to add some warmth and atmosphere to your seating space. Go wild with funky pineapple or flamingo lights.

Cushions and Throws

Cushions and throws are not just for inside your house as they can also be used in your garden! Get comfortable with extra cushions on your garden sofa and keep a bundle of throws in a basket for when the temperature starts to drop in the evening.  If you're borrowing them from your living room remember to bring them inside if it starts to rain, or you could invest in a couple of outdoor cushions that have been designed to handle the elements.

Colour

Gardens are naturally full of colour so keep it going with your accessories and décor. If too much colour scares you, you may want to pick a colour theme so it doesn’t become overwhelming.  Tropical and nautical themes both work really well in the garden and can easily be translated through colours and accessories.

Less is More

Many of us aren’t lucky enough to have a massive garden so be careful not to overcrowd your space. While ornaments, pots and planters all look lovely, too many of them can be inconvenient making the space hard to use – especially if you have kids or pets running around. To avoid going over the top, gradually add pieces to your garden as and when you need them.

Use Your Space Wisely

Before decorating your garden, carefully consider where you want everything to go. We recommend placing seating close to the entrance of the house so you don’t have far to go to grab food and drink (or when it suddenly starts to poor with rain!) Also, be careful not to block sunlight to your precious plants when building a shed, and consider placing your BBQ in the shade so your chef doesn’t burn while cooking.
