Milk Bottle Ghosts
With trick or treat and big parties out of the window for Halloween this year, I still wanted to make it special and keep my four-year-old son, Zac entertained without spending too much. So, getting creative with the recycling, we've had a fun afternoon making spooky decorations and games.
You will need
· Milk bottles and lids
· Black marker
· White plastic bags
· Twine
· Glow sticks (optional)
How to make
We get through so much milk in the week, so when I was washing the bottles for recycling, I thought that with the handles and lids these could hang as little ghosts.
1. After peeling the labels off the clean bottles, we drew simple ghost faces with a permanent black marker on the front.
2. We then placed a white bin bag over the top, screwed the lid over the bin bag and started to rip at the base of the bottle (Zac loved this bit because the more he ripped the more ghostly they looked!)
3. I tied a loop of twine around the milk bottle handle ready to hang and placed 3 glow sticks per bottle.
I've made ten of these ready to dot around the garden for a ghost hunt activity on Halloween instead of trick or treating this year.
Sweetie Monster
Looking at what else I could use from the recycle bin, I spotted an egg box upside down, and with a dino-loving child in the house I thought - that box looks like it has sharp teeth!
You will need
· 12 egg box carton
· Black poster paint
· Black marker
· White paper
· Paint brush
· Sellotape Est time 10mins
How to make
1. We painted the box with black poster paint and waited an hour for that to dry.
2. Once dry, we then drew some scary eyes on paper and stuck them with double sided tape on the front.
After that, we filled it with sweets ready for Zac who loves sneaking his hand in to steal a treat from the monster's jaws!
Pumpkin Stack
You will need
· Empty toilet roll
· Orange paint
· Black marker
How to make
1. I cut the toilet roll into halves and set some orange paint out for Zac to paint them inside and out.
2. Once dry, I drew simple pumpkin faces on them.
They're fun to stack on top of each other to see how high you can go before they tumble, can be placed in a triangle to roll a satsuma at them like bowling or look really cute just dotted around the house next to my many houseplants.
Heebie Jeebie Jars
You will need
· Green and orange poster paint
· Paint brush
· Black marker
· Jars
How to make
1. We painted the jars with a thin layer of paint so light would still come through.
2. Left it to dry which was nice and quick (about 30mins)
3. Once dry, I drew a Frankenstein’s Monster face on the green jar in black marker and a pumpkin face on the orange one.
4. I kept the jar lids so when I put glow sticks in, I know any small hands won't be able to take them out. A nice twist on this is to use LED tea lights for a brighter glow.
