How to choose the right size dining set

Start with two questions: how many people do you need to seat, and how much floor space are you working with? Keep in mind that you would want to have roughly 90-120cm of space around the table for comfortable movement, otherwise you may have to breathe in to get by!

2-seater dining sets are the ideal choice for individuals or couples who don’t require too big a table and are also a smart choice for a kitchen nook or a secondary dining spot. Our range of small compact tables includes folding and taller bar table options, perfect for fitting into smaller spaces.

4-seater dining sets are a popular choice for many homes, offering seating for the whole family. These dining sets vary in size with compact and larger options available, but are typically 80-90cm wide and between 120-150cm in length.

6-seater dining sets are the ideal choice for larger families and those who love to host. Similar to our 4 seater sets, our 6 seater sets come in a range of sizes but are typically 90cm wide and between 140-180cm in length.

If you want the capacity for more guests but can’t commit the space permanently for a larger table, we offer a range of extendable dining table and chair sets that can provide space for two more chairs when the occasion calls.

Table shapes and what they're best for

Rectangular dining sets are the most common and versatile choice. Best for rooms that can accommodate the longer length of the table and can suit 6+ diners most naturally.

Round dining sets are great for promoting conversation at dinner with no awkward corners. Ideally suited for 4 diners in a square room or more compact space. Round dining sets are also one of the strongest trends in dining right now.

Square dining sets are a great fit for square rooms and are suitable for 4 diners. This square shape offers a nice, compact option for smaller spaces. If space is limited, a square table can easily be pushed up to the wall for a two-seater setup that can be pulled out when you need the additional seating.

Chairs, benches or both: What seating works for you?

Our range includes a mix of seating options including chairs, benches and even stools for more compact setups. Each seating type has its advantages, and the right choice often comes down to how you use your dining space.

Chairs are the best choice for formal settings. They are easier to position around the table and can offer more comfort for long meals thanks to the padding and raised backs.

Benches offer more seating per metre of table and are great for families with children who can easily slide on and off with fewer chair legs to trip on. Benches can also double as occasional seating elsewhere if needed.

We also have a range of dining sets with corner seating that mix high backed seating with benches that create a booth like feel that is ideal for kitchens and open living spaces. They are also handy for maximising seating within a smaller footprint.

Materials: What to look for and why it matters

Our range of dining sets come in a wide range of possible materials, so we have pulled together a brief guide on what to look for on some of the most popular options.

Solid Oak: The most durable hardwood option that develops character over time while remaining resistant to warping and built to withstand daily use. Solid oak sits amongst the higher price point options but offers a sensible long term investment.

Engineered Wood: Offers a practical and good value option for busy households. Engineered wood is lighter weight than hardwood but still offers a highly durable frame at a more budget friendly price. This kind of wood often comes with real wood veneers or painted finishes to offer value options to fit a range of home styles.

Ceramic: Ceramic table surfaces are extremely hardwearing, with excellent scratch and heat resistance, and are typically very easy to wipe clean. While heavy to move, a ceramic table top often mimics the look and feel of higher end materials like marble but without the ultra-premium price point.

It’s also worth thinking about the chair upholstery when choosing your dining set. Chairs with fabric seats add warmth and comfort for longer meals, while our faux leather chairs and benches offer comfort and are easier to wipe clean.

Finding the right look for your dining room

Style is often the most personal part of the decision when finding the right set. Here's how some of Dunelm's most popular styles break down.

Modern dining sets offer clean lines, often with high gloss and matt finishes that are highly suitable for homes with a more contemporary style and great for open spaces.

Farmhouse dining sets are one of the most popular styles for homes in the UK. They bring warm wood tones, often contrasting with light painted finishes and upholstered or spindle-backed chairs. This style is perfect for bringing a cosy vibe that complements many home styles.

Industrial dining sets feature metal frame legs and darker finish table tops with a mix of chair and bench options. A strong option for open plan spaces and kitchen-diners.

Sometimes a more custom style is the best fit for your home, and mixing styles is becoming increasingly popular. We also sell dining tables and chairs separately so you can find the right mix to fit your style.
