Bathroom lighting is a transformative element that can change the look of your bathroom while providing much-needed functional light. There are some unique considerations when it comes to bathroom lighting and we are here to help answer some common questions.

Can you use a regular ceiling light in the bathroom?

Due to the steam and humidity in the bathroom, it’s highly recommended to choose a bathroom-specific light fitting, typically IP44 or higher. All of our bathroom lights are at least IP44 rated.

What are bathroom zones and what do they mean?

Zone 0: Inside the bath or shower basin. This is the area with the highest risk of water exposure and requires low-voltage fittings (maximum 12V). Minimum IP67 rating required.

Zone 1: Directly above a bath or shower up to 2.25m from the floor. Zone 1 covers areas subject to regular water spray and typically requires IP65-rated fittings.

Zone 2: The area extending 0.6m around a bath, shower or basin is commonly treated as Zone 2. This area requires protection from splashes rather than direct jets of water, so fittings need at least an IP44 rating.

Areas beyond Zones 0, 1 and 2: These are the lowest risk areas of the bathroom and out of the way of most risk of splashing. Standard fittings may be permitted, however we still recommend a minimum of IP44 rated lights because of regular humidity and condensation. All Dunelm bathroom light fittings are suitable for Zone 2 and the areas beyond, while fittings for Zones 0 and 1 are more readily available from bathroom and lighting specialists.

What does IP Rating mean?

IP stands for Ingress Protection. The rating number is made up of two digits: the first shows protection against solids like dust and small objects, and the second is most important for bathrooms as it shows protection against moisture. The higher the number, the greater the protection. For a bathroom fitting, IP44 should be the minimum level to consider.

IP44: Protected against splashing water. Suitable for use in bathroom Zone 2 and many general bathroom installations.

IP65: Protected against water jets. Suitable for use in bathroom Zone 1. Commonly used for shower downlights and recessed spotlights.

IP67: Waterproof and protected against temporary immersion. Required for fittings installed inside baths or shower trays (Zone 0).

Can you use a lampshade in the bathroom?

Yes, you can use a lampshade in the bathroom, but the fitting must be suitable for the zone it is installed in and there are a few considerations to take into account. Always make sure the fitting has the correct rating for bathroom use. The material of the shade can be affected differently by moisture and humidity over time, so fabric, paper and other absorbent material shades are more susceptible to staining, mildew or mould growth. Glass, metal and other moisture resistant materials are typically easier to maintain and better suited to bathroom environments but be sure that you maintain adequate ventilation to help reduce condensation and prolong the life of the fitting.

What kind of light works best for bathroom mirrors?

Mirror Lights and Backlit Mirrors: Light up mirrors offer dual functionality and are great integrated options for different tasks. Mirrors with integrated lights are specifically designed for grooming tasks and help reduce shadows when shaving or applying makeup or skincare, plus bathroom specific mirrors can sometimes also include anti-fog features. While backlit mirrors are perfect for adding a soft contemporary glow that adds ambience as well as some practical illumination.

Bathroom wall lights: A pair of wall lights either side of the mirror not only perfectly frame the mirror from a stylistic standpoint, but also provide the most flattering and even facial illumination. This is an ideal option that can help eliminate shadows caused by overhead lighting.

The recommended colour temperature for lighting to use with bathroom mirrors is 3000K (warm white, a softer, cosier light with a gentle yellow tone) to 4000K (cool white, a crisper, brighter light closer to daylight). This offers a natural appearance ideal for everyday grooming.

What type of bathroom light is best for me?

The best bathroom lighting may combine several types of lighting rather than relying on a single fitting.

Spotlights:

Directional light fixtures, often with multiple lights that can be directed individually to focus illumination onto specific areas, objects or features.

Best for: General illumination

Benefits: Clean and modern appearance, targeted light distribution.

Wall lights:

These fittings mount directly onto your walls to provide ambient or accent lighting, adding both functionality and decorative appeal.

Best for: Ambient and decorative lighting

Benefits: Softer and more relaxed feel, reduces harsh shadows, perfect to combine with mirrors.

Mirror Lights:

Compact lighting solutions that can be positioned around mirrors to enhance visibility or sometimes integrated within the mirror itself. Cabinet and vanity lights are also similar in function.

Best for: Grooming and daily routines

Benefits: Clear task lighting, improved visibility for shaving and makeup, often integrated into illuminated mirrors.

Bathroom Ceiling Lights are overhead lighting fixtures that deliver general illumination for the room, ensuring the space is bright, welcoming and functional for daily use.

Best for: Main room lighting
