Ceiling Lights

Choose the right fitting for your ceiling height and room

Dunelm offers a wide range of ceiling lights suitable for every ceiling height. In most UK homes with standard ceiling heights of around 2.4m, flush and semi-flush ceiling lights are the practical choice – they sit close to the ceiling without reducing headroom and work well in bedrooms, hallways, and living rooms. Similarly, spotlights also hang close to the ceiling but come with adjustable, directional light ideal for kitchens, home offices and rooms with artwork that is worth highlighting. For rooms with higher ceilings (2.6m and above), pendant lights direct light downward and work particularly well as a proper focal point when hung centrally or over a dining table or kitchen island. For grander spaces with 3m+ ceilings, a chandelier or cluster pendant earns its place as a statement piece. As a general rule, keep at least 213cm (7 feet) of clearance from the floor to the bottom of any hanging fitting.

Consider dimmable options

Ceiling lights that are dimmable give you full control over the mood of a room throughout the day. A dining room can shift from bright and practical for homework in the afternoon to a soft, warm glow for an evening meal. A living room can go from well-lit for reading to low and atmospheric for a film. For dimming to work, both the fitting and the bulb need to be dimmable compatible - it's worth checking both before purchasing.

Plan ceiling lights as part of a wider scheme

A ceiling light provides the ambient foundation of a room's lighting but works best alongside other sources. Wall lights, floor lamps and table lamps add warmth and fill the gaps a single overhead fitting cannot reach. The most comfortable rooms layer three types of light: ambient from the ceiling, task lighting from reading lamps or spotlights, and accent from table lamps or candles. Adding two or three additional light sources transforms how a room feels after dark far more than upgrading the ceiling light alone.

Choosing ceiling lights for bathrooms

Ceiling lights in bathrooms must be IP-rated to be safe in a wet environment. Browse our bathroom ceiling lights for a full range of IP-rated fittings designed specifically for use above sinks, showers and baths, available in flush and spotlight styles across a range of finishes.
