A rug offers a simple solution to bring colour and texture to any room of your house and adds a comfortable surface underfoot that can help dampen noise.
A rug for any room
The most obvious room of the house for a rug is the living room. It can create a focal point in the middle of the room, be positioned under sofas and chairs to tie together your seating or maybe provide a more targeted and luxurious texture with one of our sheepskin rugs.
A bedroom rug can allow you to step out of bed straight onto a warm textured surface. Whether positioning runners down both sides of the bed or using an extra large area rug that your bed goes on top of, it is an easy way to update the look of your room while adding some welcome texture. Or maybe you can place a smaller accent rug at the foot of the bed should your room have space. The noise dampening qualities of rugs can be extra useful in bedrooms and other upstairs rooms where you may have noisier floorboards, helping lessen the noise of walking about.
Runners are good options for longer, narrower hallways to bring colour to your home, however bringing the same kind of style to your stairs can feel difficult, which is where stair runners are a light touch DIY option. These take a little more effort than simply placing down a rug, however we have pulled together an easy to follow guide on how to fit stair runners.
These are some common use cases for rugs, but rugs are an incredibly versatile option throughout the home and even in the garden with an outdoor rug. A low profile rug can make a nice addition to a kitchen where you want to bring added comfort to a tiled or laminate floor, or can bring some welcome warmth to a conservatory. And should you have pets and/or children, a washable rug can always be a smart investment. If you have the space, a rug can find a place.
What rug material is right for you?
The right material depends on how and where you want to use a rug. We have hypoallergenic wool rugs and easy-to-clean cotton rugs providing a more natural feel underfoot, classic jute rugs or a wide range of synthetic polypropylene rugs that are ideal for high traffic and hard wearing areas of the home. For more detail on each material, our rugs buying guide is a useful starting point.
How to clean a rug at home?
Rugs endure a lot in your home, be it being walked over (hopefully not with shoes), pets and children, or simply dust settling over time. As a result, it is important to make sure that you give a rug a good clean from time to time. A straightforward vacuum doesn’t always do the trick as rugs vary depending on what material they are made from and length of pile, especially for longer pile and shaggy rugs. That’s why we have compiled a handy guide on how to clean your rug for each material type.
Why is my rug moving?
While some rugs are fitted with anti-slip backing, most do not have this feature and you may notice movement over time. This is most noticeable on smoother surfaces, but will also be the case when used on carpet. This can pose a hazard where the rug may slip out of place should a child come running through or someone turns sharply on the rug, so we always recommend investing in an anti-slip mat to minimise any movement.
