Which curtain lining is right for you?

Most of our curtains include a standard lining for added weight, shape, and a degree of light-blocking and insulation. But if you have more specific needs, here's how our most popular curtain lining options compare.

Blackout lining: If blocking out the sun or external lights is your priority, our blackout curtains are a good option. Blackout curtains are an ideal choice for bedrooms and a must for kids’ bedrooms and nurseries, but also quite versatile in your living room to help with TV/movie viewing. A blackout lining also has the same insulating properties as thermal curtains for better control over room temperature. With this lining type, you don’t have to choose between light control and thermal performance. It’s worth noting that no curtain alone can block out 100% of light unless using a pelmet, special curtain pole or other method to close off the light that could creep in from the outer edges.

Thermal lining: If maintaining temperature in your home is your priority, a thermal lined curtain is a good option for you. While they don't block as much light as a blackout lining, they still help darken a room more than a regular lining. The main benefit, however, is added thermal insulation at your windows. Thermal curtains can offer a sensible option for older homes that may suffer more from drafts and rooms with single glazed windows. Thermal linings work by creating an additional layer in the curtain to insulate your room in a way that retains heat in the winter while reflecting heat in the hotter months. A great option to help regulate room temperature all year round.
